Elevator Adopted Standards

Return to main page

The following standards are adopted and enforced:

Elevators and accessibility

The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires the installation of elevators in almost all new commerical buildings.

Chapters 11 and 30 of the Oregon Structural Specialty Code (OSSC) incorporate the ADA standards as prescribed in federal and state law (ref. to ORS Chapter 447). Architects and building planners must ensure that the building complies with ADA requirements of Chapter 11. When in doubt as to whether the building is required to be provided with an elevator, you should consult with the local building department.

While the Oregon Elevator Specialty Code does not regulate when elevators are required by Chapter 11 of the OSSC, it does regulate the installation of the elevator. ADA requirements for elevators are checked by the elevator program during plan review and also during site inspections.
