Q. Is it allowable to have unprotected NM cable running into the top
or bottom of a surface-mounted panel in the basement of a one- and -two-family
dwelling?
A. No. See 918-305-0165(3).

Q. What if open studs run along each side of the panel? What about a 14-inch
conduit chase from the panel to the floor joist above?
A. In each instance, wires must be protected.
