Installation of Non-Metallic Boxes

1.Q. Art. 314-23(B)(1) States that nails (screws) used to fasten a box shall be on the outside of the box or within ¼ of the back of the box. Art. 370-43 states that attachment of nonmetallic box shall be on the outside of the box or the box shall be so constructed so as to prevent contact between the conductor and the supporting screws. Is it permissible to install a nonmetallic box using screws at the front of the box and installing a nonmetallic protection ring (stonco/goof ring) to prevent contact between screws and conductors? Inspectors could note box location on rough in and check box at final to make sure the ring is in.

A. Code does not allow this specific installation, but the code panel could sympathize with specific circumstances in which such an application would be acceptable. The code panel recommended that the contractor discuss the installation in advance with an inspector and ask for an alternate method if the need arises.
